Timmins chosen to be northern terminus for passenger rail service

Timmins Mayor George Pirie confirms that his city has been selected as the northern terminus of passenger rail service.

Pirie says he knew from working with the Ontario Northland Transportation Commission that Timmins has been its favourite site.

“If you remember, the original announcement said Timmins or Cochrane,” Pirie points out. “But because of Timmins’ size and the fact that it’s a transportation hub, it was the logical choice.”

Tracks to and through Timmins were removed in the 1980s.  But they still go into Porcupine.  Pirie says a station will be built there. He foresees shuttle bus service from Cochrane and Iroquois Falls to get passengers to that station.

“You drive to the terminal in Porcupine, you get on the train and you get off in Toronto, if that’s your wish,” he says.

Passenger rail service to the Northeast was discontinued in 2012 and is expected to be back in 2025.
