Royal Canadian Legion says no to poppy crosswalk in Downtown Timmins

A Downtown Timmins plan to honour Canada’s war veterans with a poppy-themed crosswalk has been kiboshed by the Royal Canadian Legion.

Executive director Cindy Campbell says the BIA confirmed through the local Legion that national headquarters won’t allow it… as it’s not in line with what the poppy stands for as a symbol.

Campbell says the Legion strictly monitors it.

“It is an Order of Council that was passed by the federal government on the use of the poppy,” Campbell explains, “and it is the 100th anniversary of the poppy, so they are very protective of it as an image for the veterans and I understand it and I agree with it and we’ll follow their direction.”

“Downtown Timmins is pleased that what we will be doing is taking a graphic from the Legion that they’re providing us with and we will be producing window posters and putting them up in all of our businesses November 10th and 11th to honour our veterans.”
