OPP recruiting auxiliary officers

The South Porcupine OPP cluster, which includes Matheson and Iroquois Falls detachments, is recruiting auxiliary officers.

Const. Michelle Simard says to qualify for the volunteer position, you need to be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident at least 18 years old with Grade 12 or an equivalent. You have to have a Class G driver’s licence with a good record, no criminal record and be trained in CPR and first aid.

Simard say you’ll participate in community policing and crime prevention.

“They also come out on patrol and we do a lot of public service things,” she notes. “Maybe it’s a food drive or a toy drive and we like to do a lot of joint efforts with other police agencies or other agencies in our area.”

Auxiliary policing is also a good way to determine whether you want a career in professional policing.

Simard says for a police foundations student, for example, it’s a nice line on your resumé.

“It looks good on any resumé,” she elaborates. “It doesn’t matter how you look at it. As long as you’re giving back to the community where you live, it’s always a good thing.”
