Operation Impact intends to keep highways safe over Thanksgiving weekend

It’s the busiest weekend of the year on Ontario highways.   The Timmins Police Service is participating in the national “Operation Impact” enforcement initiative to keep it safe.

Communications coordinator Marc Depatie says officers will be on the lookout for the most frequent causes of people being hurt or killed: impaired, distracted and aggressive driving and seatbelt use.

“We’re focussed on that this weekend,” he states. “Everybody should enjoy their Thanksgiving weekend by driving responsibly. When you reach your destination without an accident, that is the result of proper driving behaviour.”

“The numbers speak for themselves. At Thanksgiving, there’s an increase in traffic flows either in the city of Timmins or travelling to and from.”

Depatie adds that excessive speed is a factor in 51% of collisions. About 2,000 Canadians are killed every year; 165,000usand are hurt, 10,000 of them seriously.
