438 Wilson Ave. soon to have designation of historical significance — Timmins’ first

Timmins is one tiny step away from having a registry of historically significant properties.

The first entry – the log house at 438 Wilson Ave. – is expected to get the designation in the next month.

City councillor Michelle Boileau chairs the museum board.  It oversees the municipal heritage committee. “So this will be an important step forward for the community in preserving our cultural heritage assets here in the city,” she says.

Before being designated, there will be a 30-day period for public comment.  No objections are anticipated.

“In this case, it’s a privately owned property,” notes Boileau, “and so we were fortunate to have the interest of the property owners and their support to go through with this designation.”

The house was built in the 1920s by a Hollinger Mine manager named Darling.  Current owners, the McKechnies, are only the second, and have maintained the original esthetics.
