From Timmins city councillor to mayor, Steve Black hopes his next political post is that of Member of Parliament for Timmins-James Bay. He’s running in next month’s election for the Liberal party.
Black says the entire riding shares the issues of infrastructure investments, jobs and the economy. There’s also mental health, homelessness and addictions.
“As mayor, I obviously got very familiar with them in the Timmins perspective,” he remarks. “But visiting in the other communities and talking to representatives of people there, it’s an issue right across the North that we need to come together and work and hopefully get some assistance from the upper levels of government.”
Black notes that latest consensus polling indicates the Liberals are headed to a majority government. He hopes this riding decides it’s time to elect an MP in the governing party.
The mining engineer says the Trudeau government has done a good job during the pandemic. And he says the riding has the same core issues in the large centre of Timmins and the small communities.
“People are tired of seeing their roads and highways in the shape they are. They want some more help from the governments. When you talk ti the smaller communities, they don’t have the tax bases to do those type of repairs on their own.”
In Black’s opinion, everyone wants a strong economy and their families working. Investments in the North are important, so the riding needs an MP on the government side of Parliament.
