Civic Square on Cedar St.? It’s one idea being tossed around by the BIA

Shovels aren’t going into the ground any time soon, but the Downtown Timmins BIA has big aspirations to modernize its area, and make it pedestrian-centric.

The big one that it’s asking city council to strike a committee to study is a civic square where the parking lot is now on Cedar Street, across from the old Victory Theatre.

Executive director Cindy Campbell told council this week that it would feature a replica McIntyre headframe. It would have lighting and a water feature, and serve as a stage.

“It could be used for evening entertainment,” she explained. “It could be used as a splash pad. It could be used for anything. You can also across the middle part of the headframe, you can also put a weather curtain, so it becomes a weather-proof stage.”

The BIA also has its eye on the former Victory Theatre.

“If we look at that space, the Cedar St. parking lot, as a potential civic square,” Campbell told council members, “we’re looking right across the street, having a community arts centre. So you’re really centralizing arts and programming.”

Campbell asked the city to establish a committee involving all of its departments to provide input and help find funding for all of the ideas.
