Dog and cat owners get a reprieve for at least a year on number limits

It will be a year before the limits on how many dogs and cats you can own in Timmins will be reduced,  if at all.

In the process of combining and cleaning up the bylaws dealing with the pets, the animal control committee suggested reducing it to three cats from the current six, and from four dogs to three.

At council Tuesday night, Councillor Cory Robin objected to the change.

“Simply because it’s a quality of life for residents here in town and I think that they should have input into what it is and I think it should be more situational,” Robin told council.

Clerk Steph Palmateer removed that reference, saying he’ll use the next year to collect data.

“I could find out exactly how many pet owners in the city are registered that have six cats, how many are registered that have four dogs,” Palmatter said, “and see if there’s any justification for changing them.”

On a related note, Palmateer told council that since “Pads K-9” took over animal control this year, 66 stray cats and 27 stray dogs have been picked up.
