Pikangikum forest fire evacuees go home

After a month of living in a hotel in Timmins, the last of the forest fire evacuees from Pikangikum have gone home.

Timmins emergency services manager Tom Laughren says the last 47 of the 150 left this afternoon, flying to their home in Northwestern Ontario.

“The return is always designated by Chief and Council and they wanted their members home,” Laughren outlines.

The first two flights left Timmins last Friday.

Laughren says the group that looked after the visitors is proud of its work.

“It’s a good thing to do and we learn a lot every time we do it and it’s great to be able to help and support other Northerners.”

Laughren also praises the community support whenever evacuees are brought to the city.
