Rock on the River 2021 could happen, but indoors most likely scenario

There could still be a 2021 Rock on the River. But not likely outdoors.

The Timmins Festival and Events Committee is getting $250,000 from the province. Chairman John Olaveson says there’s one catch: “It’s got to be spent before March 31st, 2022.”

Olaveson says fall weather can’t be trusted, so the committee’s trying to pull together an indoor festival.

“And the key is to have an event,” he explains, “a successful event by using that money and recouping that money. So then that (profit) can go in our account and can go towards future Rock on the Rivers.”

“The committee’s on it,” Olaveson continues. “We’re already in talks with our broker and he’s in contact with the agencies and giving us options on how we can bring some acts to Timmins and that stuff, but you know, there’s a lot of moving pieces.”

The biggest, most cumbersome piece will be renting an arena from the city for the event that will allow large enough attendance under COVID-19 protocols, that ticket prices can be kept affordable.
