As we examine Timmins history, we take one more dive this week into swimming holes and pools. Over the last several weeks, we’ve been guided by museum director-curator Karen Bachmann.
“Finally, we get to 1938 and the Lions Club in Schumacher build a pool for the people of Schumacher,” she says.
It opened with great fanfare in August of that year.
“So there’s all kinds of diving demonstrations and there’s a bathing beauty contest and there’s floodlights that are installed with the pool because of course, there’s no roof to it at this point.”
After a night-time swim at the grand opening, a big dance continued the celebration.
“Later on” Bachmann continues, “the Lions Club covered the pool and some of us remember that pool and swimming in that pool, because it was really kind of a fun one.”
It was in use until the early 1970s. The pool at the Archie Dillon Sportsplex was built in 1978.
