Counterfeit $100 bills are being circulated in Timmins.

City police communications coordinator Marc Depatie has a warning to retailers and customers alike.

“You are well within your rights to politely decline accepting any currency if you suspect that it is counterfeit or has been altered in some way to affect its legitimacy,” he says.

And if you think you’ve been handed one: “Bring it to any financial institution of your choice to have the validity of the document verified by a bank official.”

If you know who’s been passing the fake bills, you’re asked to call police or Crime Stoppers.

If you’ve picked one up, call police.
