Timmins history: Have you ever heard of a swimming resort at Pearl Lake?

Swimming in the early days of Timmins is the subject of our summer-long series of stories looking back on local history.

Timmins Museum director-curator Karen Bachmann says you might not realize that Pearl Lake in Schumacher was a ‘’’swimming resort” from the war years into the 1920s.

“There was accommodations for ladies and there was dressing rooms and there was some swimming parties and all those good things.”

Bachmann adds that people would gather their things and head to Pearl Lake for the weekend.

“Nighthawk Lake is another area tha really develops at that time. And in the 1920s they start to sell a lot of the land around here for cottages and those kinds of things. So you buy three-to-five-acre parcels at $10 and acre. Not a bad deal.”

…And that’s when swimming boating began to develop there.
