Processing timber in Quebec is hurting local businesses

The Wynne government is taking heat over letting wood bypass Ontario mills. Timmins-James Bay MPP Gilles Bisson blasted the forestry minister for letting wood cut in Ontario get processed in Quebec.

He referenced Little John Enterprises in Timmins. He says they are a second generation sawmill, that have been operating in the community for years. Bisson says the company has gone to the Ministry, and the Minister himself, in order to get an allocation of Timber.

“All they need is 8, 000 cubic metres of wood, of Poplar,” explains Bisson. “So that they can continue supplying a niche market that they’ve created, that is being supplied out of the mill in Timmins.”

But, the only answers they have been getting is that all of the resources have already been re-allocated.

“If you say most of the wood has been re-allocated, why is it that we’re shipping 71, 000 cubic metres of Poplar annually into the province of Quebec, and not supplying mills here in Ontario,” questions Bisson.

“Why should it be such a difficult thing?”

The Minister says they have been supporting the enterprise, and he isn’t sure why they haven’t come to a resolution, but references price as that could be a sticking point. He says he will look into the issue.
