Rickford taking heat over Nutrition North

The NDP is slamming Greg Rickford over the Nutrition North program. Almost 50 communities in the North aren’t included in the program, which is meant to give access to affordable and nutritious food. MP for Algoma-Manitoulin-Kapuskasing, Carol Hughes, says 19 of those communities are in the Minister’s riding.

“This spring, I was able to tour in several remote communities not covered by Nutrition North. All of the communities I visited were actually in Minister Rickford’s riding and only one was covered under the program,” says Hughes, the Deputy Critic for Aboriginal Health. “Minister Rickford has 19 communities not subsidized by Nutrition North in his riding. Where is he? How come he isn’t standing up for the constituents that elected him?”

Hughes has been an advocate for the Nutrition North program. She is calling on the Conservatives to act immediately to include the 50 left out communities.

“I implore Minister Rickford and his Conservative counterparts to support our upcoming motion to immediately include the 50+ communities not subsidized under Nutrition North,” added Hughes. “Not having accessible nutritious food is unacceptable. For a Minister not to act on behalf of so many of his constituents is shameful.”
