Two more Extendicare Kap deaths, MPP asks province to assume management

Two more deaths from COVID-19 have occurred at Extendicare Kapuskasing.

That’s confirmed by the Porcupine Health Unit, which says they are the 12th and 13th virus-related deaths among residents of the 56-bed facility.

Mushkegowuk -James Bay MPP Guy Bourgoin is calling on the province to take over management of the long-term care facility.  In a letter to Premier Ford, the New Democrat says extraordinary circumstances call for extraordinary measures.

He adds that 20 staff members have contracted the virus, including one who’s in critical condition in hospital.

There’s also a new case in the Kapuskasing area, for a total of 292 in the region since the pandemic arrived.

In addition, PHU has declared an outbreak at RYAM Lumber in Hearst.  It’s not clear from the release whether the two cases there were reported earlier. Our newsroom has asked for that information.
