Details on a potential teachers strike are unclear

How the potential teachers strike will affect students in Timmins is yet to be seen. Chair of the Ontario North East School Board, Doug Shearer, says the teachers aren’t happy with the bargaining table, and could decide to go on strike.

“Well, we don’t know exactly what format the strike will take at this point in time,” says Shearer. “It could be just job action, in which they’ll refuse to do certain administrative functions. Or, there could be rotating strikes, or there could be a full walk out.”

A letter was sent home with students this week from Shearer. It says that although a strike may not happen, if it does, all the schools within the District School Board Ontario North East will be closed from JK to Grade Eight.

The board is meeting with union representatives on Friday, at which point more information should be available.
