Council prayers to be replaced with a new tradition

The prayers read at city council meetings every week will no longer be heard. The Supreme Court ruled against it last month, and Timmins council debated the issue last night. They talked about two different options; either having a moment of silence, or stick with a prayer.

A lengthy discussion had many councillors raise religious issues. However, Councillor Mike Doody says they aren’t willing to go up against the Supreme Court.

“We’re not going to argue with the Supreme Court. And we’re not going to put ourselves in a position where one, two, or three people, decide it’s a good way to have a lawsuit.”

Council voted unanimously, and there will now be a moment of silence to open each meeting.
