Council agrees that outdoor winter facilities should be deemed essential

Ski resorts like Kamiskotia should be considered essential services in the COVID-19 era.  So should the Porcupine Ski Runners cross-country facility.

That’s the belief of Timmins city councillor Michelle Boileau.  She has asked administration at city hall to write to the health minister expressing that view.

“Especially considering that our health officials are suggesting that activity is still safe, as long as it’s done in the appropriate manner,” she remarked.

The matter came up at Tuesday’s council meeting, during discussion of a letter from Oro-Medonte Township in Southern Ontario on the same topic.

Mayor George Pirie noted that the city is already working on a plan to operate outdoor skating rinks, this first winter of the pandemic.

“We don’t know how long this is going to last and we just simply have to figure out how to operate safely,” said the mayor.

The letter to the ministry gained full backing of council.
