Lever accepts federal Liberal nomination

Todd Lever has been acclaimed as the Liberal candidate for this year’s federal election.

The nomination ceremony happened Tuesday night at the museum.

Although the federal Liberal platform hasn’t been released yet, the former city councillor would like to see tax incentives for the middle class mentioned.

“The top issue is going to be, really the Conservatives have these very targeted tax credits, tax incentives, that don’t help, they don’t reinvest into the country,” says Lever. “They don’t help the people that need it most make ends meet. They focus on the top 10, 15, percent of the population, whereas the rest are swimming debt. They cannot make ends meet.

“If you’re going to be giving tax breaks, that’s who you give it to. Those people reinvest back into the economy. So that’s going to be the major focus.”

Lever says the Timmins-James Bay riding is massive, and the government needs to be proactive.

“Investing, especially in infrastructure. And partnering with the First Nations to help them develop economically and socially. That will help all of us here. If we don’t have that, we fall by the wayside up here. It’s a different ballgame in North Eastern Ontario than it is in other places.”

The Timmins-James Bay riding has been represented by New Democrat Charlie Angus for 11 years, and Lever hopes a Liberal can take the riding back.

If elected, he says he would like to see not only the Ring of Fire develop, but the North East in general.

“There is a proper role for government; it doesn’t need to be overly active. But, it needs to have a role in sparking and stimulating our economy.
