Timmins Symphony Orchestra music school back in business despite pandemic

There’s an interesting innovation being put into place to help the Timmins Symphony Orchestra reopen its music school for in-person lessons during the pandemic.

Director Josh Wood says to teach voice and wind and brass instruments, the school is setting up a contactless studio that does away with the lag — or delay — encountered online.

“We’re setting up two adjacent rooms, each with high-quality video camera, high-quality microphone, speakers, monitor, everything like that,” he outlines. “All the connections are going to be hard-wired, and because it’s hard-wired, there’s not going to be any lag.”

Piano and stringed instrument lessons will incorporate six feet of distance between instructor and student, hand sanitizer and masks.

“It’s really important to get people playing music again, especially the younger people,” Wood comments.  “For a lot of the kids, this is really an important part of their lives and then we want to make sure we’re providing that service.”

Online lessons will continue as an option.  You can get all the details on lessons and how to sign up on the symphony’s website or Facebook page.
