Two more years for the Mountjoy Farmers Market

The Mountjoy Farmers Market will stay where it’s at for the time being. City council has agreed to a two year lease for the market at Centennial Hall. Up until now, they have been renting on a yearly basis.

Mayor Black says the short term lease lets council focus on the feasibility study for a new rec center.

“We’ve decided to proceed with the feasibility study on an aquatic center,” says Black. “It’s phase one of a multi-use facility, so we’re not really not going to be looking at the other options.”

Black is referring to Centennial Hall as one of the other options.

“It’s been discussed over the last couple of years as we looked through our strategic plan,” Black continues. “What we should do with all our buildings, our recreation, culture, and tourism facilities. They [The Farmers Market] have been kind of waiting to see where they sit so they can make their plans for the upcoming season.”

The specific terms of the lease haven’t been decided yet, but many councillors are asking for the rent to stay low. This will allow for the market to save some cash and plan for what their next step will be after the lease is up.

The issue will come back to council for a resolution.
