News SIU mandate doesn’t fit Timmins complaint SHARE ON: Bob McIntyre, staff Tuesday, May. 12th, 2020 The police command centre during the containment of Spruce St. N. between 5th and 6th Avenues, Nov. 28, 2019. (Bob McIntyre, MyTimminsNow.com staff) Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit says it can’t say whether Timmins Police did anything wrong during the arrest of a man late last November. They had sealed off Spruce Street North between Fifth and Sixth Avenues, as they looked for a reported weapon in the area. A man who continued to try to get into the restricted area was arrested for obstruction… and then complained of pain. But an examination at TADH showed no injury. Based on that, the SIU says it doesn’t have jurisdiction, and has dismissed the complaint. Its mandate would have kicked in if the man had been hurt.
