BREAKING NEWS: City Hall closes to public

COUNCIL MEETING GOES ELECTRONIC

Timmins City Hall is now closed to the public because of COVID-19.

Clerk Steph Palmateer says business and payments can still be done on line.

And now that the province says council meetings can be held electronically, staff is working on two options for Tuesday’s regular meeting.

“We’re already set up for teleconferencing, so members can just call in,” Palmateer states.  “But we’re working with our IT staff now to get set up so that we can also do videoconferencing.”

Required staff will be in the council chamber and councillors can attend in person, but Palmateer says they’re being encouraged to do it electronically.

“We won’t be allowing any public delegations at this meeting.  We’re also recommending that the public watch the meeting from home, either on the community channel or online.”

Part of the emergency legislation passed yesterday in the provincial legislature makes it okay to conduct the meetings electronically.
