Mayor in video address: Don’t panic and hoard; trying to waive penalty on late taxes

The two senior levels of government say there will be money for anyone who suffers financially from COVID-19.  And now, Timmins mayor George Pirie says he’ll try to enforce his own version of that.

During a recorded video address from City Hall late Tuesday, Pirie says he’ll ask council at its meeting next week to authorize a waiver of interest on late tax payments during the crisis.

“All in an effort to help our citizens and help the business communities, particularly the small business communities that are going to suffer as restaurants are closed, as the hotels are closed, as of course you see their revenue base decline,” said the mayor.

He also urged his city not to panic over COVID-19, saying panic is already in evidence through hoarding, particularly toilet paper.

He said when people hoard it, facilities that need it can’t get it.

“Toilet paper is made in Canada,” Pirie noted. “The manufacturers have said there won’t be any shortage of it, so we don’t need to hoard it.”
