Keeping mattresses out of landfill

When spring clean-up week arrives in Timmins on May 19th, you won’t be allowed to put mattresses and box springs out to the curb for pick-up.

The city is embarking on a six-month pilot project to keep mattresses out of the Deloro landfill down Pine Street South.

Environmental services manager Scott Tam says there will be a bin there for them.

“We request them to be wrapped just due to health and safety reasons,” he says. “Some individuals have been able to go to some of the furniture places and get some of the mattress bags from there, or they just wrap it in heavy duty plastic.”

The health and safety concerns are city workers being stuck by needles or exposed to some other hazard from the mattresses.

You’ll be charged a $15.00 recycling fee when you drop them off.
