Anti-Hunger Coalition Timmins has its first ever lead sponsor for Coldest Night of the Year.
Northern College has signed on with a $5,000 contribution towards the $40,000 fundraising target.
Susan Hunter is the college’s director of marketing, communications and external relations. She says that the concept of the starving student is reality in some cases, with that student having tough choices about how to spend their money.
“We also know that removing some barriers helps folks choose college and post-secondary education instead of other choices in life,” Hunter adds. “So we want to make sure we pave those pathways to getting more education that we know ends cycles of poverty.”
ACT executive director Jennifer Vachon welcomes the partnership with the college.
“I think it’s a really good connection between the programs that Northern offers, so for example the social service worker program and then the work that those students go on to do in the community in food security and homelessness and that sort of stuff,” Vachon states.
Registration is open for the Coldest Night of the Year walk through downtown Timmins. It’s set for Saturday, February 22nd.
