Annual Coldest Night of the Year walk set for Feb. 22

There’s no telling yet how cold it will be on Saturday, February 22nd.  That doesn’t stop Anti-Hunger Coalition Timmins from its annual observance of the Coldest Night of the Year.

Executive director Jennifer Vachon says it’s your choice of a two-, five- or ten-kilometre walk to help raise funds and awareness of homelessness issues – especially hunger.

It starts and ends at the Lord’s Kitchen, where walkers coming back are served a dinner of chili.

Vachon says that’s a good connection to hunger and homelessness.

“Being at the Lord’s Kitchen” she notes, “being served a warm meal right in the same location where folks every single week in our community go who are facing hunger to be served a warm meal.”

The financial target of the walk through downtown Timmins is $40,000.  But equally important is raising awareness of homelessness and hunger.

“Anti-Hunger Coalition focusses on food security, which is of course tied to homelessness,” says Vachon.  “So it’s all tied together and it really is just connecting people to the issues in our community that people are facing: hunger, hurt, homelessness.”

Vachon has put out an urgent call for team captains to register their teams. You can also sign up as an individual.
