Pirie’s wish list for the new MP: Make Timmins Airport a port of entry to Canada

Timmins Mayor George Pirie wants people to be able to enter Canada by landing at the Timmins Airport, instead having to go through another airport first.

That’s one item on his wish list for whoever wins the MP’s seat for Timmins-James Bay next week.

“It’s (the airport) a critical hub for Timmins,” Pirie states.  It’s a critical asset for Timmins, and the strong message that we want our federal representative back to Ottawa is that we want it to be a port of entry.”

One reason he wants that is because of the international nature of the mining industry.

“And with the amount of activity that we have, the critical jump-off sport that our Timmins Airport is to the rest of the north, surely we can become a port of entry.

Pirie says just because there’s never been one this far north in Ontario, doesn’t mean it should be.  He adds that it will give Timmins a leg up on future developments in the area.
