Highway 144 open after 2nd trail derailment in Gogama

The second trail derailment in less than a month has MPP’s calling on the feds to do something about train safety. 35 CN Rail cars went off the tracks early Saturday morning, some of which ended up in the Mattagami River system. Glenn Thibeault, MPP for Sudbury, tweeted out that the federal government is responsible for rail safety, and they must do more to protect our communities and the environment.

The cars were hauling crude oil and while some caught fire, others ended up in the Mattagami River. Firefighters finally doused the flames from the burning cars on Sunday allowing the all clear for the 144 to re-open. It may still be closed periodically so CN can remove cars. No one was hurt in the derailment.
