March is colorectal cancer month in Canada. The Canadian Cancer Society is raising awareness for the disease that is 90-percent curable when caught early. Joanne Bennett, a public health nurse from the Porcupine Health Unit, says the key to catching it early is getting screened.

Bennett says those aged 50-74 are at risk.

Or, if you have a relative who has been diagnosed, get screened 10 years earlier than the age at which they were diagnosed, whichever comes first. Get a screening kit from your family doctor or Tele-health Ontario.

Bennett says taking the test is simple and doesn’t require help from anyone else. You can pick up the screening kit at your doctors office, or can contact Telehealth Ontario at 1-866-797-0000.
