Emailed threat leads to evacuation of Timmins YMCA, two elementary schools and a daycare centre

A threat of explosives emailed to the Timmins Family YMCA this morning led to the voluntary evacuation of that building, Pope Francis Elementary School, Schumacher Public School and the ABC daycare on Moore Avenue in South Porcupine.  The Y offers programming at all four of those sites.

While the buildings were empty, police scanned them to determine whether the threat was legitimate.  Nothing suspicious was found.

Timmins Police communications coordinator Marc Depatie says all investigative resources are being used to find the perpetrator.  A large part of that involves electronics.

“…To review the origin of the email as well as a thorough scan of all surveillance cameras in the areas that can provide some investigative advantage in regards to this incident,” he explains.

Depatie adds that whoever’s responsible for the threat faces criminal charges.

“Certainly this falls under the high end of the mischief to property or public mischief aspects of the Criminal Code,” he tells My Timmins Now Dot Com,  adding that the Crown Attorney would be consulted on exact charges that are warranted.
