Farmers Market back in its new home this week

The Mountjoy Farmers Market is back at its Participark location this Saturday, after spending last weekend at the Timmins Fall Fair.

Chairman Garnet Wilcox says over the next few weeks, the market will concentrate on getting some of its junior vendors back, or getting new ones involved.

The seventh so far this season will be there on Saturday.

Wilcox notes that past market management limited the youngsters to one junior vendor day a year.

“Although I’m not opposed to having a day to recognize junior vendors,” he comments, “I think it’s important to have them as part of our regular markets.  We need to make it relevant and interesting to youth, because they’re the farmers and producers of tomorrow.”

Wilcox also thinks the junior vendors learn from the more seasoned ones by being immersed in their market.

Meanwhile, Wilcox continues to be pleased with increased customer traffic at the new location.

“We usually see about 500+ people a week there.  Even on a long weekend which is traditionally really slow, we still saw about 350 people.”

Three-hundred-and-fifty people would have been a good day when the market was at the Mountjoy Arena every week.

Market hours are 9:00am-1:00pm, every Saturday until Thanksgiving.
