College gets federal money towards developing mining technology

Northern College is getting a two-hundred-thousand-dollar mining research grant from the federal government.  The money will go towards hiring someone with the expertise to work with students on developing technology for the mining industry.

The college’s manager of applied research, Amy McKillip, says they’ll work on automation that will, for example, make some jobs easier and safer.

“It’s definitely no removing jobs at all,” she’s quick to state.  “It’s making jobs safer and potentially making them slightly different.  But the government is actually doing this in the hopes of creating jobs.”

And she says the college wants to develop students with hands-on learning.

“So the students are crucial in this whole research and development program, so that they are on the ground working with these technologies and therefore hopefully become the experts that can operate, fix and create these technologies for the future of mining.”
