False alarm leads to evacuation of 101 Mall

A suspected fire forced evacuation of the 101 Mall shortly after 11:00am Tuesday. It turned out to be a false alarm.

Businesses, offices and court rooms were all cleared.  Timmins Fire Department Lieutenant Vic Helin says the alarm came from the building’s duct system.

“Nothing was found,” he states.  “They’re (building management)  going to do some checks with the monitoring company and service company and they’ll get back to us on it.”

Helin says it was probably a defective sensor.

The all-clear to go back inside was issued about 15 minutes into the incident.

“We have to evacuate in the chances there is an actual fire,” Helin notes.  “That’s just the proper protocol to do.”
