Cochrane woman retiring from hospital gift shop after 65 years

It’s not often that someone stays in the same volunteer position for 65 years.  Then again, Aline Tousignant isn’t just anyone.

She is retiring after 65 years of working in the auxiliary’s gift shop at Lady Minto Hospital in Cochrane.  It was renamed “Aline’s Boutique” about ten years ago.

Tousignant says when she started, the doctor she worked for said why not?

“When they have a good horse, they put him to work,” she laughingly recalls him telling her.

The 89-year-old says after a recent fall, she doesn’t get around as well.

“They were asking me if I wanted to retire, so I decided myself, so I felt better, it came from me.”

Tousignant thinks she might miss the work and the people, but says she can always go back and visit.

“I said if I can make my 65 years,” she comments, “I’ll be just happy.  And I did.”

A party in honour of Aline Tousignant and her retirement is set for Monday between 12:00pm and 3:00pm in the lobby at Lady Minto.
