Forest on fire near Gogama *UPDATED as of 8pm Sunday*

**UPDATE FROM MNRF as of 8:00pm**

  • Fire now 6.000 hectares
  • West of Hwy. 144, running parallel
  • Flames could cross Hwy. 144, so OPP have closed it between intersection of Hwy. 661 and south intersection of Hwy. 560
  • Aerial suppression (water bombers) has been used the last two days
  • Timmins 2 still NUC (not under control)

A forest fire that’s been burning near Gogama all weekend has had people in that hamlet on evacuation alert, and has been making travel to and from Sudbury a challenge.

The fire is called “Timmins 2” and covers at least 2,500 hectares.  One hectare is roughly the size of a football field.  The flames are consuming trees just west of Gogama.

Flames were first detected on Thursday night.

Mostly because of smoke reducing visibility, Highway 144 has been frequently closed all weekend.  If you have to get to Sudbury, you might be better off going via Highways 11 and 17.
