Over 1M L of crude oil spilled in Gogama derailment

More than one-million litres of crude oil was spilled during the CN train derailment in Gogama. The Transportation Safety Board has released a report on the derailment. In it, they say all of the cars were up to standards and made in the last three years.

The report also compared the derailment to the Lac-Megantic disaster. It is still early in the investigation, but the TSB says the oil was spilled in a similar way. Although the derailment happened at a much lower speed, the cars ruptured in the same way as Lac-Megantic. Shipping flammable oil has been called dangerous by the TSB in their 2014 watch list.

The report went on to suggest that the cars can’t handle even a low speed crash, and that better tank cars are needed.
