First responders food drive goes this Sunday afternoon across Timmins

It started with firefighters in the East End and now, the annual food drive involves firefighters, paramedics, OPP and city police officers picking up donations between Connaught and Mountjoy Township.

This year’s edition goes this coming Sunday between noon and 4:00pm.  The proceeds go to both the Timmins and South Porcupine food banks.

Timmins president Rick Young says it’s the biggest food drive of the year.

“We really rely on this to keep us going, almost ‘til Christmas time,” he tells My Timmins Now Dot Com.

When you hear sirens in your neighbourhood on Sunday afternoon, bring your non-perishable food items out to the street.  If you won’t be home, leave them on the front porch.

Young says you can also make a cash donation.

“Actually, it’s twofold,” he says of the benefit of that method.  “They can get a receipt for tax purposes and we can also buy food, exactly what we need.  It’s getting more popular all the time.”

Just put the cash in an envelope with your name and address on it, and you’ll get the receipt.
