Winter has taken another swipe at us with snow and freezing rain, but don’t expect to see a full snowplowing operation in Timmins.
Public works manager Ken Krcel says workers have been taken off pothole filling and dealing with draining issues. They’re now providing traction and some scraping on the roads.
“Some of our main streets, we’ll just use our underbelly plows on our sand trucks to clear off,” he states, “but I don’t foresee us meeting our requirements under the minimum maintenance standards for our Class 4 and 5 roads that be required to plow. It’ll mostly be sanding and salting to just try and break it up. We will plow the sidewalks to scrape off as much as we can.
“It’s really just a matter of re-prioritizing our work and getting back into that winter operation mode, make sure our sand trucks are providing traction on these roads and trying to get our sidewalks re-cleared.”
If there’s a lesson in the situation, Krcel says it’s a reminder that just because everything is clear and dry one day, that doesn’t mean it won’t be snowy and icy the next.
