Funding is essential to ACR, says Hughes

The federal Minister of Transportation will meet with stakeholders who are trying to save passenger service at Algoma Central Railway.

But New Democrat Carol Hughes is holding off an applauding the move for now.

Hughes, of Algoma Manitoulin Kapuskasing, has been after the feds continuously to provide steady funding to ACR to preserve jobs.

Hughes says without the funding hundreds of jobs from Sault Ste. Marie to Hearst will be lost, and between 38 to 48 million dollars in economic benefits for the region will vanish.

Last year the feds put some money into ACR but Hughes says that was a short-term fix to address a crisis the Tories created in the first place.

Hughes did get a commitment that the minister will meet with stakeholders but she’s holding off on celebrating until there’s a solution.
