Use a bridge to cross the river, not the ice

Walking across the ice on the Mattagami River is being discouraged by the Timmins Police Service.

Communications coordinator Marc Depatie says police have received several calls with people saying they have seen people doing this.  But with the thaw conditions expected this week, police recommend against it.

“There are pedestrian pathways on both bridges, on Alqonquin and on Lafleur Drive that allow for pedestrians to cross the river safely” says Depatie.

“The inherent dangers that come along with unpredictable ice levels and the flows of water underneath that you can’t really see denigrate the thickness of the ice without any true warnings.”
