Two police officers from our region are heading to St. John’s, Newfoundland at the end of March for national police curling competition.
South Porcupine OPP Sergeant Steve Meunier and Timmins Police Constable Tony Chilton are half of the rink that won the Northern Ontario Police Curling Championship, last weekend in Astorville, near North Bay. The other two curlers are police officers in Sudbury and North Bay.
Chilton says the team is now looking for financial support from their communities… to fund their participation in the nine-day national bonspiel.
“Hotels and flights are pretty expensive,” he says, “ so we’re looking for just a bit more assistance to offset those costs.”
Chilton says the national tournament is no weekend bonspiel. It is nine days of competition from several rinks with experience at the Brier, and national and world junior tournaments.
“There’s also many past Canadian Police Curling champions as well that are playing,” Chilton notes. “So the competition every year is very stiff and it’s always very competitive on the ice.”
