TIME TO THINK ABOUT THROWING OUT YOUR CHRISTMAS TREE *UPDATE* DROP-OFF LOCATIONS

Family tradition might dictate that you leave your natural Christmas tree up until after New Year’s Day, and maybe until “Little Christmas” on Jan. 6.

That’s okay to Timmins fire prevention officer Dennis Sebalj, as  long as you water the tree every day and keep it away from heat sources.

“We’d still like to have everybody having a working smoke alarm in the house and a carbon monoxide alarm,” Sebalj notes, “so if the tree did catch fire through the evening, you’d have an early warning with a working smoke alarm.”

He also reminds us that a frayed wire on the lights could cause an electrical short, igniting the tree.

“You shouldn’t have a frayed wire,” he says. “They should be all checked before you put them on the tree.  But the tree can go up within 30 seconds.”

Meanwhile, City of Timmins waste management supervisor Dwight Chorney says you can unload your tree on the city until Jan. 13.

“People can get rid of their Christmas trees by dropping them off at any of the 13 locations across the city,” he tells Moose FM and mytimminsnow.com.

Don’t put your tree out at the curb with your garbage and recycling bins. Chorney says they won’t be picked up from there. He also asks that you remove all the decorations, before bringing your tree to one of the drop-off locations.

“The trees are going to be chipped and used as cover material at the landfill,” he says,” so we prefer that all decorations are taken off of them.”
