Councillor Debates Take Place this Week

You have another opportunity to learn more about councillor candidates before hitting the polls.

The Timmins Chamber of Commerce is hosting debates for all the different Ward Councillor candidates this week as another way to get better educated. Chair Nancy Mageau says the debate nights will feature statements from the candidates and a question period. “Just so that each of the residents in those different wards can get a different perspective and know and understand the representatives that are running for them in their areas because those candidates, whoever the successful candidates may be, is the one who’s actually going to representing them in that ward.”

Mageau says the debates will be similar to the mayoral debate, but some format changes will have to be made because of the number of people that will be there. “With the councillors, because there are a few different wards at the two different events that are being hosted, it has to be tailored a little bit different. So each councillor will have their time to give an overview of what their platform is.” She adds that the questions will be figured out as things go along depending on time.

Debate night for wards two, three and four will be tomorrow night at Northern College starting at 6:00pm. Mageau says ward one and five councillors will have their debate Thursday at College Boreal starting at 6:00pm.

The MyTimminsNow.Com newsroom will be at both debates and will provide an update afterwards.
