New Stop Signs Placed at Spruce Street Intersection

There is a new four-way stop in town.

New stop signs have been placed at the Spruce Street South and Kirby Street intersection.
This was approved by city council in August when safety concerns were brought to the roundtable. A report from police showed that collisions at that intersection went from one in 2012 to seven in 2017.

The city also placed new no-parking signs near the intersection eliminating six of the 22 spots around the businesses and homes there. The city says this is to ensure people can also see around the parked vehicles when driving through the intersection. Manager of Engineering Pat Sequin says “We’re looking at this in the eyes of safety because it’s one thing to put stop signs, but you have to see oncoming traffic. People will start going through and if you can’t see them, that causes another safety hazard.” Seguin adds that “We realize that stop signs, there’s a legal requirement to stop, but people will slide through, people will speed through. I think it’s important when you approach an intersection you see oncoming traffic that’s going to cross that street.”

City crews also placed warning signs in the area so everyone is aware of the changes.
