Buzzing Innovation Creates New Partnership.

Timmins students created a buzz landing them a new partnership.

In 2016, Goldcorp put out a challenge to five of the high schools in Timmins to improve bee survival rate in the region by building their own bee hive. Sustainability Manager Bryan Neeley says unfortunately all the hives created by students at Roland Michener, O’Gorman, Timmins High and Theriault were damaged over the winter and all the bees died. Neely says all the students and Goldcorp learned a lot from the process.

Goldcorp created a few awards to the groups for their hard work including:

  • The Honey Comb Award for most honey produced – Theriault received $500
  • The Survivor Bee Award for the bees that lived the longest – O’Gorman and Theriault both received $500
  • The Golden Colony Award for the top hive – since all hives did not last the entire season, there was no winner
  • Each school was awarded $1,000 for their contributions to the project

Neeley says students at Theriault created their own side project where they incorporated technology into a few hives.

He says that these students saw a 100 per cent survival rate with this project. Neely says this project has opened the door for a partnership in the future.

Neeley says this project was fun and enlightening. He says this shows the commitment to innovation and bettering the  reclamation of the mine.
