Ending the stigma around mental illness is a goal for Activist, Author and Former First Lady Margaret Trudeau.

Trudeau spoke to about 500 people at Northern College last night about her struggles with bipolar disorder and how she handles it. She says she uses her low depression and high manias as a vehicle to send out a message and end the stigma around reaching out for help.

She explained how she there was weight loss, shopping sprees and impulsive trips before she finally met a doctor who explained what she was experiencing.

Trudeau says the best thing to do is get help and learn about the illness.

She says there are lots of places to get that information including the local Canadian Mental Health Association branch.
