A 51-year-old man is in good condition after falling through ice on the Mattagami River yesterday. Timmins Police Service Communications Coordinator Marc Depatie says the man was ice fishing when one of his legs broke through the ice. Depatie says the man was able to free himself, but police were on scene to assess him.
He hopes this incident serves as a reminder to others about ice safety. Depatie says the warmer weather has softened the ice and it’s not safe around the rivers edge.
Depatie adds that police are hoping the ice will harden more with this cold snap, but until then you have to be extra careful near any frozen water.
