UPDATE: Police Close and Evacuate Timmins Airport

Update: The Timmins Airport is back open after police evacuated and closed it this morning. A 22-year-old man from South Porcupine has been taken into custody. Timmins Police Service Communications Coordinator Marc Depatie says airport security found a replica grenade novelty cigarette lighter and a container of lighter fluid in his baggage. The investigation is still ongoing.

Original Post: Timmins Police Service and Airport Authority have evacuated and closed the Timmins Airport. A suspicious item was found during standard baggage screening processes at approximately 4:30am. All morning flights departing from the airport have been cancelled. It is recommended that travelers check with their individual airline to determine the status of any flight.

There is no active threat to public safety as this incident is contained to the airport terminal. The matter remains under police investigation‎. The public is reminded not to use 9-1-1 service to inquire about flight status arriving or departing from the airport.
